The valley

About the Wachau Valley

The Wachau is 33 km of the Danube between Melk and Krems, first named in a document of 830 AD and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Its vine terraces climb to about 450 m above sea level, planted with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and Melk Abbey's library holds more than 100,000 books. Join us in Dürnstein below its castle ruin, on the river between Spitz and Melk, and at the wineries around Spitz. We bring together the tours that put the abbey, the boat and the wine into one easy day. Start with the three below.

Melk Abbey

An adult ticket costs €16 in 2026 and covers the museum, the Marble Hall, the balcony, the library and the abbey church, with a guided tour for €4 more. English tours run at 10:55 and 14:55 from April to October. Allow at least two and a half hours, and from 7 January to 19 March 2027 you can visit only with a guide.

The Vineyards

Wachau wine is dry and white, and Vinea Wachau sorts it by strength: Steinfeder up to 11.5%, Federspiel up to 12.5% and Smaragd from 12.5%. Wachau DAC names the origin, from regional wine to one of 157 single vineyards, and every grape is picked by hand. Over 200 estates belong to Vinea Wachau.

Things to Do

Dürnstein's blue baroque tower belongs to Stift Dürnstein, open daily from 28 March to 26 October 2026. The Aggstein ruin runs about 150 m along its rock above the right bank, and the museum at Göttweig Abbey opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 until 1 November 2026.

The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket costs €88 for an adult from Vienna in 2026 and covers the train out and back, a DDSG sailing between Melk and Krems and Melk Abbey entry. The nearest stations are Krems/Donau and Melk/Donau, and the Wachaubahn runs along the left bank from Krems to Emmersdorf, daily from 24 April to 1 November.

The coach days leave from Operngasse 8 by the State Opera, and the shared wine days from Franz-Josefs-Kai 45 near Schottenring, where the bike tour also starts before its train. The wooden boat leaves from the pontoon in Spitz, and the private tours collect you where you stay in Vienna.

Not always. There are no Wachau Valley tickets: the valley has no gate, and its villages, lanes and vineyard paths are open to walk. The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket, €88 for an adult from Vienna in 2026, bundles the train, a DDSG sailing between Melk and Krems and Melk Abbey entry, and it suits you well if you only want the abbey and the river.

Is there a ticket to enter the Wachau Valley?

No. The Wachau is open river landscape, villages and vineyards, with no gate. What you pay for inside a day is Melk Abbey (€16 for an adult in 2026), the Danube boat (€25 to €52 depending on the stretch), and tastings or lunch where your fare leaves them out.

What are Wachau Valley ticket prices on a tour?

Tour fares run from about $79 per person on a shared coach day to $3,117 for a private car for two. Check each card for Melk Abbey entry, the boat and wine, because those three decide what your day costs in the end.

Is Melk Abbey included in Wachau Valley tours?

On some, and it moves the cost of your day by €16 a head. Entry is in the fare on the RSL private tour, the Austria Limo private day and the DRL business Salzburg day, and on both Vienna Explorer wine days outside the boat season. Vienna Sightseeing Tours includes it in winter and on its all-inclusive option in summer; on the rest you pay at the door.

Does the Danube boat run all year?

No. DDSG sails the Wachau from 28 March to 1 November 2026, daily in full from 25 April to 4 October and on a reduced timetable either side. The shared day tours swap the boat for Melk Abbey outside that season.

What happens if low water stops the boat?

Sailings are cut or re-routed. In September 2026 DDSG ran a substitute timetable, and the Weißenkirchen and Emmersdorf piers stayed closed after regular sailings resumed on 16 September. A tour then replaces the boat with another stop: one traveller's group went to Melk Abbey instead.

How long is a Wachau Valley tour from Vienna?

Most full days run 8 to 11 hours door to door. The days that add Salzburg and Hallstatt run 12 to 13 hours, and the wooden-boat trip from Spitz is 2 hours on the river.

Which Wachau Valley wine tour is best?

It depends on the day you want. For a small group, the Vienna Explorer tour capped at 8; for lunch and a sommelier in the fare, Wolfy's private day; for cycling between tastings, the Grape Grazing bike tour.

Can I book a private tour with hotel pickup?

Yes. Most private tours collect you at your hotel or address in Vienna, and Private Trips Vienna also collects in Bratislava. The wooden-boat trip is the exception: it starts at the pontoon in Spitz.

How do I make a Wachau Valley booking or reservation?

Choose a tour, pick your date and book through the button on its card. The operator confirms your reservation, and the confirmation carries their contact details and your booking reference.

Can I cancel and get my money back?

Almost always: the listings refund in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. The exception is Wolfy's private wine tour with gourmet lunch, which is non-refundable, so be sure of your date before you book it.

Are children welcome on the wine tours?

It depends on the listing. The Vienna Explorer small-group wine day prices children aged 5 to 12 separately, while Wolfy's private wine tour is for adults 18 and over. Read the age line on your listing before you book a family.

Is lunch included?

Only Wolfy's private wine tour lists a gourmet lunch in the fare. On the other days you buy lunch on the day, and the bike tour's listing puts it at €17 in cash.

Can I take photos inside Melk Abbey?

Not in the interior rooms. Private photos are fine on the balcony, in the courtyards, the park and the pavilion, and on the Northern Bastion.

Is a Wachau day trip worth it in winter?

Yes, with different goals. There is no boat, Melk Abbey can be visited only with a guide from 7 January to 19 March 2027, and Krems averages 3.5 °C at the warmest part of a January day. The shared wine days add the abbey tour when the boat stops.

Can I visit the Wachau without a tour?

Yes. The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket (€88 for an adult from Vienna in 2026) covers the train there and back, a DDSG sailing between Melk and Krems and Melk Abbey entry. A tour earns its fare when you want wine tastings without driving, a guide, or door-to-door transport.
