Melk Abbey in the Wachau Valley: 2026 Tickets, Hours and Tours

Melk Abbey tickets and prices for 2026

These are the abbey's own prices, valid from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. They include the town of Melk's entertainment tax and 13% VAT. If you need a carer and your disability card says so, your carer enters free.

You buy an individual ticket at the ticket office in the first courtyard, on the day. The combination with Göttweig Abbey makes sense if you are also crossing to the eastern end of the valley.

Opening hours by season, and the guided-only winter

The abbey is open every day of the season, but the way you visit changes in winter. From 7 January to 19 March 2027 you get in only on a guided tour, so plan your day around 11:00, 13:30 or 15:00.

The abbey park keeps its own hours: 9:00–17:00 from 28 to 31 March, 9:00–18:00 from 1 April to 24 October, and 9:00–17:00 again from 25 to 31 October.

What the ticket lets you see

One adult ticket covers the whole visit, the abbey church included. Allow at least 2.5 hours if you want to see everything below.

• The museum in the former imperial guest rooms, on the abbey's history and its work today
• The Marble Hall
• The balcony, with the view over the town of Melk and the Danube valley
• The library, which holds more than 100,000 books, including 1,800 manuscripts
• The abbey church, which you visit on your own after a guided tour
• The Northern Bastion with the Wachau Lab, all year
• The abbey park and its baroque pavilion, from April to October

The building is the size of a small village: 1,365 windows, 497 rooms and about 3.5 hectares of roof.

Guided tours in English and other languages

A guided tour lasts about 50 minutes and takes you through the museum rooms, the Marble Hall, the balcony and the library. It costs €4 on top of your ticket, and you can join the next one on the spot.

Photos, dress and house rules

You may not take photos or video in the interior rooms. Outside, private photos are fine, so save your camera for these places:

• The balcony and the inner courtyards
• The abbey park and the garden pavilion
• The Northern Bastion

Costumes, historical or fantasy, are not allowed. Drones need a written permit, requested at least seven days ahead. Dogs on a lead may enter the courtyards, but not the interior or the park, apart from service and guide dogs.

Getting from the pier, the station or the car park

From the boat, the walk takes about 30 minutes:

1. Leave the Melk pier at Hafenspitz along Fährstraße.
2. Cross the green lift bridge.
3. Walk through the pedestrian zone of the town centre.
4. Climb the stairs to the abbey, or take Wiener Straße if you want to avoid steps.

From Melk railway station you walk through the town centre to the main entrance in 10 to 15 minutes. By car, set your navigation to Stiftsstraße, 3390 Melk. Parking is free when you buy an admission ticket: validate your parking ticket at the ticket office. You can also leave free within 15 minutes. Accessibility at the abbey

Most of the visit is wheelchair-accessible. The exceptions are the interior of the garden pavilion and the mineral collection, and the gravel paths in the park are hard going, especially with an electric wheelchair. Disabled parking spaces and a lift take you from the car park to the level of the entrance.

Which tours put Melk Abbey in the fare

This is where Wachau fares differ most. Some include your ticket, some include it only in winter when the boat is not sailing, and some take you to Melk and leave the door to you.
