Visiting the Wachau Valley: What Is Free, What You Pay For
There is no gate to the Wachau and no ticket for the valley. You pay for Melk Abbey, for the boat and for what you taste. Weighing up Wachau Valley day tours? Check those three lines first, and the rest of the choice gets easier.
A river valley, not a site
The Wachau is the Danube valley between Melk and Krems: 33 km of river, terraced vineyards and villages on both banks. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 as the Wachau Cultural Landscape. Fifteen municipalities lie inside it, from Melk in the west to Krems in the east. You can walk the lanes of Dürnstein, sit by the river or follow the Wachau World Heritage Trail without paying anyone.
What is free, and what costs money
The villages, the riverbanks and the 180 km trail cost nothing. Three things inside a day do. Melk Abbey charges €16 for an adult, the DDSG boat charges by the stretch you sail, and each winery sets its own tastings. The table gives each price as its own seller prints it for 2026.

Which tours put Melk Abbey and the boat in the fare

Opening hours and seasons in 2026
Two dates matter more than any others. The boats sail only from 28 March to 1 November, and from 7 January 2027 Melk Abbey lets you in only with a guide. On a tour the operator times the visits for you; on your own, plan the day around these.

Central Vienna
The coach days leave from Operngasse 8 by the State Opera. The Vienna Explorer wine and bike days start at its office at Franz-Josefs-Kai 45, near Schottenring.
Your hotel
Most private tours collect you at your hotel or address in Vienna. One also collects in Bratislava, and the kayak day can meet you at Westbahnhof instead.
In the valley
The traditional wooden-boat trip starts at its pontoon in Spitz an der Donau. You get there yourself, by car or on the boat.

Access and mobility
Most of Melk Abbey is wheelchair-accessible, though not the pavilion interior or the mineral collection, and the park's gravel is hard going. It lends two wheelchairs by reservation, and a carer enters free with a disability card. The tours are another matter. Metatours' private tour lists wheelchair-accessible transport, while the other listings say they are not accessible or do not say.

What makes a day go well
- Check which option you booked. On the most-booked coach day, Melk Abbey is in the fare in winter but only on the all-inclusive option in summer.
- Carry some cash. The bike tour's lunch is not in the fare: the listing puts it at €17, paid in cash.
- Leave the camera in your bag indoors. Melk Abbey allows no photos or video in its interior rooms; the balcony, the courtyards and the park are fine.
- Bring layers and rain gear. The tours run in all weather, and a January day in Krems averages 3.5 °C at its warmest.
