What that means in practice

The tours listed here are sold by Viator and GetYourGuide. When you follow a link from one of these pages and go on to book, the platform pays us a share of its own commission. You pay the same fare either way; the price on the booking page is the operator's price, not a marked-up one.

What we are not

We are not a tour operator or a ticket office. We do not run any of these tours, employ any of these guides or hold your booking. Your contract is with the operator, through the platform.

We have no connection with Melk Abbey, DDSG Blue Danube, ÖBB, the Wachaubahn, any winery or the regional tourist office, or with any of the businesses these tours stop at.

How tours get listed

Operators cannot pay for placement, position or a badge. The badges are arithmetic: the best seller is the tour with the most reviews, the top-rated tour carries the highest rating across a substantial number of reviews, and the best value is the cheapest fare. Where one operator sells a similar tour on more than one platform, both can appear, because both are separately bookable.

The featured tours at the top of the homepage are three different ways into the valley — the most-booked coach day with Melk Abbey and the Danube boat from Operngasse 8, a small-group wine day capped at eight from Franz-Josefs-Kai 45, and a private castles-and-wine day that collects you at your hotel — and each starts somewhere different.

Prices, ratings and how current they are

Prices, star ratings and review counts belong to the operators and were read from their own listings on 16 September 2026. They move, and the figure at checkout is the one that counts. Every fare is quoted in US dollars, because that is how the listings were captured; nothing is converted at an exchange rate. Most fares are per person, and the ones sold per car, per boat or per kayak unit say so beside the price.

Where we give a price in euros, it comes from the body that sets it: stiftmelk.at for Melk Abbey, ddsg-blue-danube.at for the boats and Stift Dürnstein's season, and ÖBB's railtours site for the Wachau-Ticket, and the Aggstein ruin, Stift Dürnstein and Göttweig Abbey from their own sites. Facts about the valley come from UNESCO Austria and donau.com, the wine from Vinea Wachau, the railway from wachaubahn.at, the apricots from wachauermarille.at, and the weather from GeoSphere Austria's Krems station. Where a figure comes from an operator, such as a lunch cost or a cycling distance, the page says so. Where a listing's own euro figure for the boat or the abbey disagrees with the official 2026 price, we print the official one.

What we deliberately do not publish

Train journey times from Vienna to Krems or Melk, until they are read on ÖBB's own timetable. The bike tour's "about an hour" is the operator's figure.
Access rules for the Dürnstein castle ruin and a date for the church at St. Michael, which we have not read on an official page.
The year Richard the Lionheart was held at Dürnstein. UNESCO Austria calls the imprisonment legendary and dates it only to the 12th century.
Apricot-blossom dates, wine-festival dates and heuriger opening calendars, which we have found only on third-party pages.
River-ferry fares and hours, which we have not read on the ferry operators' own pages, and the regional tourist office's opening hours, which its own site does not list.
A boat that is sure to sail. Low water cancels and re-routes sailings, as it did in September 2026, and no listing can promise the river on your date.
