Wachau Valley Tours

When to Visit the Wachau Valley, Month by Month

The Wachau is an outdoor day, and the calendar decides what your fare buys. Your date settles whether the boat sails, whether Melk Abbey needs a guide, and how warm the terraces are. Comparing Wachau Valley boat tours? Check your month first.

What the season does to a Wachau day

Three dates change what you get. The DDSG boats sail only from 28 March to 1 November 2026, on the full timetable from 25 April to 4 October. From 7 January to 19 March 2027, Melk Abbey lets you in only on a guided tour. And outside the cruise season, the shared wine days swap the Danube cruise for a guided Melk Abbey visit.

Water level matters too. In September 2026 low water forced DDSG onto a substitute timetable until 16 September. If your day depends on the river, check the sailings before you book, or choose a day that does not.

If the boat is the point of your trip: go between 25 April and 4 October, and look at Wachau Valley boat tours that include the sailing in the fare.

The Wachau Valley month by month

Figures are the 1991–2020 averages for Krems, at the eastern end of the valley, from GeoSphere Austria. The dates are the 2026 dates set by the boat line, the abbeys and the railway.

January

Krems averages 3.5 °C at its warmest and −2.9 °C at night, with 20 mm of rain and 53 hours of sun. Melk Abbey opens only for guided visits from 7 January, at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00. No boats sail, so check your tour's winter plan. Dress for frost.

February

Krems averages 5.9 °C at its warmest and −2.2 °C at night, with 16 mm of rain and 89 hours of sun. It is the driest month of the year. Melk Abbey stays guided-only. No boats or Wachaubahn trains run, so a tour is the simplest way into the valley.

March

Krems averages 10.9 °C at its warmest and 1.2 °C at night, with 29 mm of rain and 140 hours of sun. The Wachaubahn starts weekend trains on 13 March. Aggstein and the Göttweig museum open on 21 March. The boats and Stift Dürnstein start on 28 March, on a reduced timetable.

April

Krems averages 16.9 °C at its warmest and 5.0 °C at night, with 32 mm of rain and 205 hours of sun. Melk Abbey opens 9:00 to 17:30 from 1 April. The Wachaubahn runs daily from 24 April, and the full boat timetable starts on 25 April. The kayak season begins on 20 April.

May

June

Krems averages 24.9 °C at its warmest and 13.2 °C at night, with 81 mm of rain and 232 hours of sun. The midsummer fires light the Wachau on 20 June and the Nibelungengau on 27 June. Expect slow roads that evening. An extra Wachaubahn train runs on 20 June.

July

Krems averages 27.0 °C at its warmest and 14.8 °C at night, with 77 mm of rain and 242 hours of sun. It is the warmest month. Melk Abbey adds an Italian tour in July and August, and an evening Wachaubahn runs on 18 July. The 2026 apricot harvest was over by 1 August.

August

Krems averages 26.6 °C at its warmest and 14.3 °C at night, with 78 mm of rain and 243 hours of sun. It is the sunniest month on average. Every boat, train and abbey keeps its summer hours. Book shade into your day: the shared tours spend hours outdoors between villages.

September

Krems averages 21.0 °C at its warmest and 10.1 °C at night, with 49 mm of rain and 170 hours of sun. Low water put the boats on a substitute timetable until 16 September 2026. The kayak season ends on 30 September. Check the river before you pick a boat day.

October

Krems averages 14.8 °C at its warmest and 5.5 °C at night, with 34 mm of rain and 109 hours of sun. The main boat season ends on 4 October; reduced sailings follow. Stift Dürnstein closes after 26 October. Aggstein's Christmas market starts on 30 October.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter

Spring (March to May): the valley reopens in stages. By late April the boats, the Wachaubahn and Melk Abbey's long hours are all running, and you get over 200 hours of sun a month from April.

Summer (June to August): the warmest and sunniest months, with highs of 25 to 27 °C in Krems. It is also the wettest stretch, with around 80 mm of rain a month, so bring a light layer as well as sun cream.

Autumn (September and October): mild days of 15 to 21 °C and less rain. The boats keep sailing into October, but watch the water level in a dry September.

Winter (November to February): cold and dark, with highs of 3.5 to 8.5 °C. The boats stop, so a winter day centres on Melk Abbey and the villages. Choose a tour with a vehicle and dress warmly.

Best time of day

The tours with a set start leave Vienna between 7:00 and 9:30 and reach the valley mid-morning. Melk Abbey opens at 9:00 in the season, and the first English guided tour is at 10:55, so on your own an early train puts you in the first tour of the day.

On the river, the boat downstream from Melk leaves at 11:00 and reaches Krems at 12:50. Going upstream takes longer: the 10:15 from Krems reaches Melk at 13:20. If you are planning your own day, see the abbey first, take the 11:00 boat downstream, and take the train home from Krems.

Light fades early in winter: December averages 45 hours of sun across the whole month. Put your outdoor stops first and leave the abbey for the afternoon.

Weather and season questions

What is the best month to visit the Wachau Valley?
For the boat and every village open, pick late April to early October. May and September are milder than July and August, but in a dry September low water can change the sailings.
Can I visit the Wachau Valley in winter?
Yes. With no boats sailing, the small-group wine day takes you into Melk Abbey instead, and from 7 January to 19 March the abbey opens only for guided visits. Dress for 0 to 5 °C.
When does the Danube boat stop sailing?
DDSG's last sailings of 2026 are on 1 November. From 5 October the timetable is reduced, and from 2 November to late March no boats run.
