Melk Abbey: in the fare in winter, an option in summer
This is the one thing to settle before you pay. The day is sold in four options: English or Spanish, each with or without a Melk Abbey ticket. In winter, from 4 November to 22 March, the basic day includes the abbey but has no boat. In summer, from 30 March to 3 November, the basic day has the boat but no abbey. Only the all-inclusive option gives you both.
If you pick the basic summer option, you still get an hour of free time in Melk. You can walk up and buy a ticket at the door for €16, the abbey's 2026 adult price. Before you do, know that you cannot take photos in the interior rooms. The balcony, the courtyards and the park are fine. The Danube boat, 30 March to 3 November
From the coach, the Wachau is a road between vineyards. From the river, you see the whole picture: the stone terraces above the villages, the ruins on the ridges and the towers of Dürnstein and Melk. That is why the summer option puts you on a boat, and why travellers name the cruise as often as the abbey.
Plan for one thing the operator cannot control: the water level. In September 2026, low water forced the regular Wachau boats onto a substitute timetable, and some piers stayed shut after sailings resumed. If the river is too low, your day changes shape. Krems and Dürnstein with your guide
The coach reaches Krems after about 75 minutes. You spend an hour and a half there on a guided walk, then drive 15 minutes to Dürnstein for 45 minutes. It is a short stop, and it is the one travellers most often wish were longer. Use it for the lane below the blue tower rather than the climb to the ruin. Who this suits, and who should book a wine day
Book this if
This is your first Wachau day and you want Melk Abbey and the Danube from one seat, with a guide doing the planning. It suits couples, friends and solo travellers who are happy with a big coach and a set timetable. You speak English or Spanish, and you would rather see three towns than taste wine.
Book something else if
You came for wine: the small-group wine tasting tour has eight seats and tastings in the fare. If you want the lowest fare and will pay Melk at the door, the Melk, Dürnstein and Krems coach day gives you longer in each town. Leaving Operngasse 8
You board at Operngasse 8, 1010 Vienna, in the first district beside the State Opera. Your booking confirmation gives the time for your option. The coach does not bring you back to the same stop: it finishes at Biogena Plaza, so check the return point when you plan your evening.

Know before you go
- Check your option. In summer only the all-inclusive option includes Melk Abbey, so read the option name before you pay.
- Bring money for lunch. Lunch is not in the fare, and your hour in Melk is the natural time to eat.
- The boat depends on the river. Low water can cut sailings, so keep the day flexible if the summer has been dry.
- Know where you finish. The coach returns to Biogena Plaza, not Operngasse 8.
- Keep your camera away inside. Photos are not allowed in the abbey's interior rooms; the balcony and courtyards are fine.
- Carry a passport or ID card. It is on the operator's list of things to bring, and pets are not allowed.

Is Melk Abbey included?

What if the boat cannot sail?
