Melk Abbey or the Danube Boat? How Season Decides Your Wachau Valley Day
The short answer. On a shared day tour from Vienna, the calendar makes the choice for you. In the boat season you get the Danube, and outside it you get a guided tour of Melk Abbey. If you want both on one date, book an option or a day that puts both in the fare, or go on your own with the ÖBB Wachau-Ticket.
Most first-time visitors picture the Wachau as two things: a baroque abbey on a rock above Melk, and a boat gliding past vineyards. The shared Wachau Valley day tours sell both, but rarely on the same day. The reason is simple. The boats stop sailing in autumn, and the abbey is open all year. So the tours swap one for the other, and the date you book decides which you get.

When the Danube boat sails in 2026
The scheduled Wachau boats belong to DDSG Blue Danube. In 2026 its three ships sail between Krems and Melk from 28 March to 1 November. The full timetable runs daily from 25 April to 4 October, with up to four sailings a day in each direction. Before and after that, a reduced timetable runs, and MS Austria sails at weekends only.
If you travel on your own, a main-season morning looks like this. MS Wachau leaves Melk at 11:00, reaches Spitz at 11:40, Dürnstein at 12:30 and Krems at 12:50. Upstream, MS Dürnstein leaves Krems at 10:15 and reaches Melk at 13:20. A single from Krems to Melk costs €43, and a return €52. Melk Abbey through the year
The abbey keeps longer hours than the boats. From 1 April to 31 October it opens 9:00 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00. From 2 November to 6 January it opens 10:00 to 16:30. Then the rule changes: from 7 January to 19 March 2027, you can visit only with a guide, at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00.
That winter rule is why the shared tours bring a guide to Melk. Your fare covers entry and the guided tour, so you never stand at the door working out the next slot. An adult ticket costs €16 in 2026, and a guided tour costs €4 more. English tours for individual visitors run at 10:55 and 14:55 from April to October. - The ticket covers the museum, the Marble Hall, the balcony, the library and the abbey church.
- From April to October it also covers the abbey park and its baroque pavilion.
- Allow at least 2.5 hours for the full visit, by the abbey's own advice.
- Photos are not allowed in the interior rooms; the balcony and courtyards are fine.
April and October: the swap weeks
The edges of the season are where travellers get confused, so check your exact date. Take the day tour with wine tasting: its Melk Abbey tour runs until 3 May. Its summer cruise runs from Spitz, so ask the operator which of the two your April date carries. The small-group wine tasting tour cruises from May, so a late-April date means the abbey instead.
The Melk Abbey and Danube boat tour splits its year differently. Its summer runs from 30 March to 3 November, and its winter from 4 November to 22 March. Pick the all-inclusive option in summer, and you get both halves of the day. The weather in each of those months is on when to visit the Wachau.
Can you have the abbey and the boat on one date?
Yes, in four ways.
- The all-inclusive summer option on the Melk Abbey and Danube boat tour, from $136.

- The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket, at €88 for an adult from Vienna: the train, a DDSG sailing between Melk and Krems, and abbey entry, valid on two calendar days.
- Your own plan: the train, a boat ticket from €43 and €16 at the abbey door.
The Wachau-Ticket's boat part runs 28 March to 1 November, the same as DDSG's season. It cannot be printed at home.
Which to choose
- First visit, summer: the boat, because the valley reads best from the water.
- Art and history first: the abbey, at any time of year.
- Visiting from November to March: the abbey; there is no boat to choose.
- Wine first: either, on a day with tastings in the fare.
