The Wachau Valley Without a Tour: Train, Boat and Abbey

You can see the Wachau Valley without a tour: there is no gate and no valley ticket, and the train, the boat and the abbey all sell to walk-up visitors. Here is how to put the day together yourself, what it costs, and when a tour earns its fare.

Can you do the Wachau on your own?

Yes. The valley is open landscape, villages and vineyards. Trains run from Vienna to Krems and to Melk, the stations nearest the valley's two ends. DDSG's ships sail between them in season, and Melk Abbey sells tickets on the spot at its first courtyard.

What you give up is a guide, door-to-door transport and tastings arranged for you. What you gain is time. You decide how long to stay in Dürnstein, and whether to add Göttweig Abbey, the Aggstein ruin or a walk on the terraces.

What does the Wachau-Ticket cover?

ÖBB's Wachau-Ticket bundles the three things most visitors want. It covers second-class train travel from Vienna and back, a DDSG sailing between Melk and Krems in either direction, and entry to Melk Abbey. A guided abbey tour adds €4.

• Adult from Vienna: €88 in 2026, or €77 with a Vorteilscard.
• Child aged 6 to 14: €49. Under 6 travel free.
• Validity: two calendar days, 36 hours from the start.
• Boat part: 28 March to 1 November 2026, with fewer sailings before 25 April and after 4 October.

It cannot be printed at home. Outside the sailing season it loses the boat, so check whether it still makes sense for your date.

For a family, compare it with separate tickets. On DDSG, children up to 9 sail free and those aged 10 to 15 pay half, and Melk Abbey sells a family ticket at €32. Depending on the ages of your children, separate tickets can come out cheaper than a €49 child Wachau-Ticket each. Work out both before you buy.

Downstream or upstream: which way to sail?

Downstream, from Melk to Krems, is quicker. In the 2026 main season the 11:00 from Melk reaches Spitz at 11:40 and Krems at 12:50. Upstream, from Krems to Melk, the 10:15 reaches Spitz at 11:45 and Melk at 13:20, over three hours against the current.

So the classic plan is simple. Take the train to Melk, see the abbey in the morning, and sail down to Krems or Dürnstein after lunch. The 13:50 from Melk reaches Dürnstein at 15:10 and Krems at 15:30. From Krems, the train takes you back to Vienna.

What does a DIY day cost?

Here is a day on your own, costed in euros from the official 2026 prices, next to the lowest tour fares. Train fares are ÖBB's to quote, so the separate-ticket row leaves them out.

Add lunch on every row. A return sailing costs €52 instead of €43 if you want to come back by boat, and children up to 9 sail free.

Where can you taste wine without a guide?

Almost anywhere. Vinea Wachau alone counts over 200 member estates. The valley's wine taverns, the heurigen, open on their own calendars, so check before you travel.

The estates tours visit are a good start: Weingut Johann Donabaum, Josef Jamek and Franz Hirtzberger in Spitz, and Domäne Wachau. Opening hours vary by estate, so check each estate's own site before you go. The Wachau vineyards page explains what Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd mean on a wine list. And if you taste, do not drive.

How do you get from the boat or the train to Melk Abbey?

On foot, in both cases. From the Melk Hafenspitz pier it is about 30 minutes: along Fährstraße, over the green lift bridge, through the pedestrian zone, then up the stairs. If you need to avoid stairs, take Wiener Straße instead. From Melk station the walk is 10 to 15 minutes.

Your ticket covers the museum, the Marble Hall, the balcony, the library, the abbey church and the Northern Bastion, and from April to October the abbey park. The abbey suggests at least two and a half hours for all of it. English guided tours for individuals start at 10:55 and 14:55 from April to October, with 13:55 added from May to September. A guided tour adds €4 to your ticket, and it is the easiest way to see the library properly. Photos are not allowed in the interior rooms.

So a morning on your own could run like this: an early train to Melk, the 10:55 English tour, lunch in town, then the 13:50 sailing to Dürnstein. That leaves the late afternoon for Dürnstein before you continue to Krems for the train.

Timetable traps: the last boat and the shoulder season

The last boats leave earlier than most visitors expect. In the main season, the last departure from Melk is 16:25; you change ships in Spitz and reach Krems at 18:10. The last from Krems leaves at 15:45 and reaches Melk at 18:50, again with a change in Spitz.

The shoulder seasons are thinner still. From 28 March to 24 April and 5 October to 1 November 2026, one ship sails each way daily: 10:15 from Krems and 13:50 from Melk. A second runs only on Saturdays and Sundays. Miss the 13:50 on a weekday and you are taking the train. A return ticket is valid for one day, and you can break the journey and rejoin a later sailing.

What should you do when low water stops the boat?

In a dry late summer the Danube can drop too low for the timetable. In September 2026, DDSG ran a substitute timetable of loops from Krems and Melk. Regular sailings resumed on 16 September, but the Weißenkirchen and Emmersdorf piers stayed closed until further notice.

Check DDSG's notice on the morning you travel. If the boat is off, keep the abbey and the villages and swap the river for the railway or regional buses 715 and 720. A tour on a boat day swaps in another stop. The wooden boat from Spitz is a different kind of trip, two hours with a skipper, so ask the operator how the water affects it.

The Wachaubahn as a fallback

The Wachaubahn runs along the left bank from Krems to Emmersdorf, opposite Melk. In 2026 it runs daily from 24 April to 1 November, and on Fridays, weekends and holidays from 13 March to 15 November. Evening trains run on 2 May, 20 June and 18 July.

It follows the left bank, where Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen and Spitz sit, so it is the natural fallback on a low-water day. You can buy tickets online or on board, by cash or card, and seat and bike reservations are free. DDSG also sells a boat and Wachaubahn combination from €44.20.

Driving, and the one problem with it

By car, take the S5 to Krems or the B3 towards Melk. At Melk Abbey the car park on Stiftsstraße is free with an admission ticket, and a lift runs up from it.

The problem is wine. The Wachau is a wine valley, and whoever drives cannot taste. If everyone in your party wants a glass, the train, the boat or a tour moves you instead.

When is a tour the better buy?

A tour earns its fare in four cases. You want wine tastings and nobody wants to drive. You want a guide to explain Melk Abbey and Dürnstein. You travel in winter, when the boat is gone and a coach saves you two train legs. Or you have one day and would rather not work out connections.

The coach day to Melk, Dürnstein and Krems costs $79 and gives you six hours in the valley. The Melk Abbey tour with the Danube boat costs $136 with a guided abbey tour and, in season, the river. Compare them with the €88 ticket above, and choose the day you would rather plan.
