Wachau Valley Tour Prices and What Each Fare Buys

Wachau Valley tour prices run from $79 for a coach seat to $3,117 for a chauffeured car for two. Most of that spread comes down to what the fare buys: are you paying per person or per group, is Melk Abbey in the fare, and is the Danube boat?

Wachau Valley ticket prices: there is no valley ticket

The Wachau is open valley, not a site with a gate. You do not buy a ticket to enter it. The tickets that exist are for things inside it: Melk Abbey at €16 for an adult in 2026, the DDSG boat from €25 to €52 depending on the stretch, and places like Stift Dürnstein and the Aggstein ruin.

So a tour fare buys transport, a guide and whatever that listing includes. Two fares of the same size can buy very different days. The rest of this guide shows where the money goes.

What are the price bands?

The fares fall into three bands. Here they are side by side, with what each fare includes. Prices move with the date you pick.

Shared days run $79 to $232 per person. Private days priced per head run $338 to $1,154. The per-group fares run $642 to $3,117, for a boat, a kayak, a van or a car.

What does $79 buy, and what does it leave out?

The coach day to Melk, Dürnstein and Krems is the lowest fare, at $79 per person. It rates 4.8 from 90 reviews. You get a modern coach from Operngasse 8 at 8:00, a professional guide and driver, and about six hours in the valley: two in Krems, 90 minutes in Dürnstein and two and a half in Melk.

It leaves out entrance fees, food and drinks. If you go inside Melk Abbey, add €16. A Dürnstein distillery offers a free schnapps tasting, with a non-alcoholic option. There is no boat. For a first visit on a budget, it is still the most valley for the money.

Why do the boat tours cost more?

Because the boat and the guided abbey tour are paid for. The Melk Abbey tour with the Danube boat costs $136 and includes a boat trip from 30 March to 3 November and a 75-minute guided Melk Abbey tour. Bought on your own, DDSG's full stretch costs €43 one way.

The wine days with a cruise cost $228 to $232, because tastings are in the fare too. The small-group day also caps its group at eight.

Which fares put Melk Abbey in the price?

Melk Abbey entry is the one extra that moves the cost of a day most, at €16 a head. Here is where it sits in each fare.

• In the fare all year: the DRL business Salzburg day, RSL's grand private day and Austria Limo's private wine day.
• In the fare in some seasons: the small-group wine day in winter, in place of the cruise, and the Vienna Explorer day tour from 1 March to 3 May and 7 October to 31 December.
• On one option: the Vienna Sightseeing Tours day includes the abbey in winter, and in summer only on its all-inclusive option.
• Grounds only: Cozy Travel's private day spends its hour in the courtyards and grounds.
• Paid on the day: the coach day at $79 and Metatours' private van.

Per person or per group?

Read the line under every price. Most fares are per person. Some are per group: the wooden boat covers up to four, the kayak day a kayak for two, Metatours a van for up to six, and RSL a car for two.

A per-person private fare usually has a minimum. Cozy Travel, Private Trips Vienna and Wolfy's need two travellers, so a solo traveller pays for two. Austria Limo's minimum is one.

When does a private tour cost less per head?

When you fill the vehicle. Metatours' van costs $992 for up to six, about $165 each with six on board. That is less per head than the shared wine days at $228 to $232. But Melk Abbey entry, tastings and the boat are all extra on that van.

The wooden boat works the same way: $642 for four is about $160 each. RSL's car for two works the other way, at about $1,558 each, because it includes a certified guide, Melk Abbey admission and a boat trip for just two people.

What do the extras cost: Melk, lunch, the boat?

If your fare leaves them out, here is what you pay on the day, from the official 2026 prices.

• Melk Abbey: €16 adult, €32 family, €8 student up to 27. A guided tour adds €4, and an audio guide starts at €3.99. The park alone costs €5.50.
• The boat: €43 one way or €52 return between Krems and Melk; €34 or €41 between Spitz and either end; €25 or €28 for a short hop. A bicycle costs €3.
• Lunch: the bike tour lists €17 in cash. The other tours leave the price to the restaurant.
• Other sights: the Aggstein ruin costs €10.50 for an adult, Stift Dürnstein €9.50 and the Göttweig Abbey museum €14.

Do children and seniors pay less?

On the tours, it depends on the listing. The small-group wine day prices children aged 5 to 12 separately, while Wolfy's sommelier day is for adults 18 and over. The fares show no senior rate, so check the price for each traveller at checkout.

At the attractions, discounts are clear. On DDSG, children up to 9 sail free and those aged 10 to 15 pay half; travellers 60 and over get 20% off from Sunday to Friday. The Wachau-Ticket costs €49 for a child aged 6 to 14.

Which fares are refundable?

Almost all of them. Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start, with one exception: Wolfy's private wine tour with gourmet lunch is non-refundable. At $1,154 per person, be sure of your date before you book it.

A refundable fare matters in the Wachau, because the boat depends on the water level and the weather. If the forecast turns, you can move your day.

Is the cheapest tour the best value?

For time in the valley, often yes. The coach day at $79 gives you six hours across Krems, Dürnstein and Melk. Add €16 for the abbey and it still costs less than most other shared days.

It is not the best value if you want wine or the river. A tasting day at $232 includes the tastings, a group of eight and a cruise in summer. And if you want the valley to yourselves, the private Salzburg day is poor value for the Wachau alone: it spends 40 minutes there. Match the fare to the day you want, not the lowest number.
