A Wachau Valley Day Trip from Vienna, Hour by Hour

A Wachau Valley day trip from Vienna runs eight and a half to ten hours on most tours. Here is how those hours are spent: when you leave, how long you get in Krems, Dürnstein and Melk, where lunch falls, and what the boat and the winter change.

What is the shape of a Wachau day from Vienna?

Almost every tour runs the same spine. You leave central Vienna in the morning and drive west into the valley. You stop in two or three of its places: Krems at the eastern gate, Dürnstein with its blue tower, and Melk with its abbey at the western end. Then you drive back.

The valley itself is about 33 km of river between Melk and Krems. The time on a tour goes to the stops, not the distance between them. What changes from tour to tour is which stops you get, how long each lasts, and whether a boat leg or wine tastings fill the middle.

Leaving Vienna: 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 or 9:30?

The start time tells you what kind of day you have booked.

• 7:00: Private Trips Vienna collects you for its Salzburg and Hallstatt day. The Wachau gets 40 minutes of it.
• 8:00: the coach day to Melk, Dürnstein and Krems leaves Operngasse 8, by the State Opera. The kayak day collects you at around 8:00 too.
• 9:00: the small-group wine day leaves Franz-Josefs-Kai 45. Wolfy's and Austria Limo's private days collect you at 9:00.
• 9:30: Cozy Travel's private day collects you at your hotel.

An earlier start buys more hours in the valley, not more stops. Metatours' private van is the exception to all of these: you arrange your own start within a 9:00 to 18:00 window.

Krems first or Melk first?

Most coach days go east to west. The Melk Abbey tour with the Danube boat spends 90 minutes in Krems, then 45 minutes in Dürnstein, then Melk. The coach day at $79 does the same: two hours in Krems, 90 minutes in Dürnstein, and two and a half hours in Melk.

Metatours' private day turns it round. It visits Melk Abbey first, drives the valley, then walks Dürnstein and passes through Krems. Neither order is better. The first saves the abbey for the afternoon; the second starts with it.

How long do you get in Dürnstein?

It ranges from 40 minutes to two hours, depending on the tour.

• 40 to 45 minutes: the Salzburg combinations, and the Vienna Sightseeing Tours day.
• 90 minutes: the coach day at $79, with a guided visit and free time.
• Two hours: the Vienna Explorer day tour, an hour tasting and an hour free, and Cozy Travel's private day.

Forty minutes is a walk down the main street and a look at the blue tower of Stift Dürnstein. Two hours lets you climb to the castle ruin and still sit down for a glass.

Where does lunch fit?

On most day trips, lunch is in the middle and at your own cost. The coach day at $79 folds it into its two and a half hours in Melk. The Vienna Explorer day tour gives you 75 minutes in Weißenkirchen. The small-group day eats at a family-run wine tavern.

Only Wolfy's private wine day includes lunch, at Josef Jamek. The DRL business day offers an optional 45-minute lunch at a local restaurant between Melk and Hallstatt.

Melk Abbey: 20 minutes or 75?

This is the biggest difference between day trips. The Vienna Explorer day tour stops at Melk for a 20-minute photo stop in summer. The DRL business day spends 40 minutes at Melk Abbey, entry included. The Vienna Sightseeing Tours day gives you an hour of free time in Melk and a 75-minute guided abbey tour.

The abbey itself recommends at least two and a half hours for the full visit. Its English guided tours for individuals run at 10:55 and 14:55 from April to October, with 13:55 added from May to September. If the abbey is your reason to go, pick a day with a long Melk stop, or read Melk Abbey prices and hours and go on your own.

When does the boat leg run?

DDSG sails the Wachau from 28 March to 1 November 2026. The full daily timetable runs 25 April to 4 October, with fewer sailings either side. The tours follow their own dates: the Vienna Sightseeing Tours day lists its boat trip from 30 March to 3 November, and the small-group wine day sails from May to September.

On the wine days the cruise starts in Spitz, and on the small-group day it runs between Spitz and Melk. Low water can stop it. In September 2026, DDSG ran a substitute timetable, and the piers at Weißenkirchen and Emmersdorf stayed closed after regular sailings resumed on 16 September.

Getting back: 18:00 or later?

The coach day at $79 is back at Operngasse 8 around 18:00, after ten hours. The Vienna Explorer day tour runs nine hours, and the small-group day eight and a half, so a 9:00 start brings you back in the early evening. The bike tour runs eleven hours and finishes at Spittelau station.

If you have a dinner booking or an evening concert, allow for traffic on the way in. None of the day tours lists a fixed return time except the coach day's "around 18:00".

Can you add Salzburg and Hallstatt to the same day?

You can, but the Wachau becomes a short stop. The private Wachau, Hallstatt and Salzburg tour runs 12 to 13 hours from 7:00. It drives through the valley, gives you 40 minutes in Dürnstein, then two hours each in Salzburg and Hallstatt. It rates 5.0 from 48 reviews and costs $338 per person, with two at least.

The DRL business day runs 13 hours and costs $128 per person. It gives you 45 minutes in Dürnstein and 40 minutes at Melk Abbey, entry included, then an hour in Hallstatt and two and a half hours in Salzburg. Book either for three places in one day, not for the wine villages.

What does winter do to the itinerary?

From November to March the boat is gone and the abbey changes its rules. From 2 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, Melk Abbey opens 10:00 to 16:30, with guided tours at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00. From 7 January to 19 March 2027, you can visit only with a guide, at those same three times.

The shared wine days adapt. The small-group day adds Melk Abbey entry and a guided tour in place of the cruise. The Vienna Explorer day tour adds a guided Melk tour from 7 October to 31 December. Krems averages 3.5 °C at the warmest part of a January day, so dress for cold cobbles. When to visit, month by month has the rest of the year.

What should you bring for the day?

Comfortable shoes come first. Dürnstein's lanes are cobbled, and the last stretch up to Melk Abbey is stairs, unless you take Wiener Straße. Bring layers and rain gear too: the day tours run in all weather, and the valley can be cool on the river.

Carry some cash for lunch and small purchases, and a card for the rest. If your fare leaves out Melk Abbey, the adult ticket is €16 at the first courtyard. Inside the abbey's rooms photos are not allowed, so save the camera for the balcony, the courtyards and the park.
